Do You Have to Use Your Headshot on Your Podcast Cover Art?

Are you planning to start a podcast but afraid that you’ve got a face for radio and don’t want your headshot on the cover art?

People Like Listening to People

If you’re worried about having your face on your podcast cover art, you’re not alone.
There can be a lot of reasons that people feel that way.

Maybe they feel it’s a little bit too vain to have their own face front and center. Maybe they don’t love the way they take photographs. But all of these concerns, as valid as they are aside, it’s usually a good idea for most business podcasts to have some kind of visual representation of themselves on their podcast cover art.

When we look at the top performing business podcasts in our State of Business Podcasting Report, we find that about 71% of those podcasts have a person in some way or another on the art.

It can be a headshot, it can be a body shot, it can be some kind of graphic art. But what it comes down to is that people like listening to people. And especially if you’ve got an audio only show, or if you have your name itself associated with your brand in any way, then you want to be able to put a face to that name and a face to the voice that people are listening to so they can imagine seeing you while they’re hearing your voice.

It can be a little bit less important for a video show if somebody’s going to be watching you. But honestly, if that’s the case, you probably won’t worry about having your face on the cover art anyway.

So even if you’re not normally comfortable having pictures of yourself out there, if you can manage it, if you can overcome the weirdness of seeing your own face on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, you should try to put a picture of yourself on your cover art. Maybe you can make it graphical, get a graphic designer to add a couple of layers, a couple different filters to make it look a little bit less human if that makes you more comfortable.

But get your face on there so that people know who they’re listening to.
