You researched them. You interviewed them. You edited and released their episode. Then you never spoke to them again.
Listen Now:
Do you want to take a wild guess as to what happens with most podcast guests after they’ve been interviewed on a podcast, maybe even when they were really excited about it?
Absolutely nothing, and it is such a waste.
So when you have a relationship building podcast, the connections that you’re making with other people are the most important part of the whole podcast.
It’s more important than the notes, the video, the assets and anything else that you’re doing.
And yet for so many podcasters, once they have gone to all of the trouble of inviting someone, researching them, interviewing them, post producing the interview and releasing it, they never follow up with the guest.
Again, many of them don’t even let them know when their episode is live.
A relationship is not built on one event alone, even an event like a podcast that has multiple different touch points that you can be optimizing.
To build a real relationship, you have to be a human in the relationship, and that means making an ongoing effort to connect, to be involved and to be the kind of person somebody wants to be friends or professional colleagues with.
So there’s a lot of different ways that you can do this.
I’m taking the fact that you have a good podcast workflow, a great recording, wonderful assets, all of these things as sorted.
But the other things that you should be doing are just being the kind of colleague and professional connection that somebody else would like to have.
Follow them on social media, share their stuff, send them things that you think they will find interesting.
When you see something that could help them, send it their way. And if you’ve got a referral for them, absolutely send that their way.
A relationship building podcast is the beginning of the relationship.
It can open door that might not have been able to be open to you otherwise, but you’ve still got to actually walk through it and build the relationship.
The podcast is the beginning, but to take things to the next level and to start seeing real professional outcomes from your relationship building podcast, you’ve got to invest the time in actually building the relationship with your guests.
