The Situation
When Jess Sato joined Megan Dougherty on the Business Podcast Spotlight, she was more than 60 episodes into the Purpose + Profit Podcast—a show she launched reluctantly but has stayed incredibly consistent with. The podcast pairs with her long-running blog and helps amplify her message around purpose-driven business and thought leadership. Jess was starting to think about how the show could evolve to include other voices, support her bigger mission, and still fit into a workflow that works for her style and time.
About Jess Sato
Jess Sato is a business growth and visibility strategist who helps impact-driven women turn their big ideas into bold, clear messaging that fuels real momentum. Through her company, she works with entrepreneurs who want to challenge the status quo and lead meaningful change in their industries or communities. Jess is also the host of the Purpose + Profit Podcast, where she shares insights on thought leadership, mission-led business, and the power of using your voice to create impact.
What’s Happened So Far
Jess has been doing something a lot of podcasters only dream about – sticking with a consistent release schedule for over two years, without missing a beat. Her podcast, Purpose + Profit, grew out of her long-running blog, and it’s always been deeply tied to her mission: helping women use their voices to lead change and create real impact.
But here’s the twist: she never actually wanted to start a podcast. In fact, she kind of hated the idea at first. It felt like “one more thing” everyone was doing and Jess isn’t one to follow the crowd just because. So, she made a deal with herself: if she was going to do it, it had to be fully on her terms. No fancy tech. No overthinking. No music. Just clarity, consistency, and her actual voice.
Over time, the show has become a natural extension of her brand. It’s a way for people to get to know her, learn from her, and understand the deeper values behind the work she does. But lately, Jess has been feeling that familiar nudge – what if this podcast could do more? What if it could not only share her own message, but help amplify the voices of others doing world-changing work too?
So now she’s asking a new set of questions:
Can she evolve the show without losing the simplicity that’s made it sustainable?
What would it look like to bring in guests, especially when she wants conversations that go deeper than the typical Q&A?
Could short, focused series be the key to expanding the show’s impact without turning it into a full-time job?
And maybe most importantly:
Can you push back against “best practices” and still build a podcast that works beautifully, for your business and your life?
The New Plan
As you heard in the episode, Jess isn’t trying to blow up her entire podcast strategy, she just wants to stretch it a little. After two solid years of solo episodes that pair with blog posts, she’s ready to experiment with something new: guest voices, deeper storytelling, and content that supports her bigger mission without hijacking her calendar.
The plan? Keep the existing feed (no need for a whole new show) and introduce occasional themed series – something like a mini-campaign inside the podcast. Each series would explore a specific issue Jess cares about, like menstrual equity or global sisterhood in entrepreneurship, and could include her own reflections, guest interviews, and actionable insights.
To keep things tidy, she’ll flag these episodes with clear titles and visuals so listeners know when something special is happening. And because she loves a good system, it’ll all be designed to fit neatly alongside her regular workflow. Think blog post + podcast episode, just like now, but with a few new voices in the mix.
These series can also tie into bigger initiatives, like her upcoming retreat in Egypt. A collection of episodes that builds awareness, shares stories, and gets people excited about joining? Yes, please.
Best of all, it’s flexible. If she loves it, she can do more. If not, no harm done, it’s just one more way of using the platform she’s already built, on her own terms.
Business Podcast Blueprints Analysis
This new series-based direction is a classic Audience Engagement Podcast move, where the main goal is to serve and connect more deeply with the people already in Jess’s world.
Her audience knows her through her blog, her work, and the podcast itself, and now these mini-series will let her show up in an even more focused and intentional way. Each one will offer deeper value, more mission alignment, and new ways for listeners to engage with the issues that matter.
It’s a smart, flexible format that can adapt to whatever she’s most passionate about – and whatever her audience most needs to hear.
How to Use This Strategy
So if you’re thinking about adding short, mission-driven series to your podcast like Jess, here are a few questions to get you started:
What topic or cause do you care about deeply – and want your audience to care about too?
Are there guests or stories you could bring in to raise awareness, share practical tools, or spark action?
How might this series support something else in your business, like a launch, an event, or a larger campaign?
Once you’ve got your focus, sketch out a few episode ideas that would help someone understand the issue, feel inspired, and know what to do next. That’s your structure. You don’t need a huge overhaul – just a clear theme, consistent messaging, and a light production touch to help it stand out.
You can record all the episodes up front, release them as a block or weekly over a set period, and promote the series like its own little product. Think of it as a podcast-within-a-podcast and a tool you can use again and again.

How to Track Success
Here are the metrics to keep an eye on for a short, mission-focused podcast series that’s meant to build deeper engagement and drive meaningful action:
- How many people you share the series with directly and how many reply, share it, or take some kind of next step.
- The number of conversations or collaborations that start because someone heard the series (this includes DMs, emails, and “I heard you on…” moments).
- Any business tied to the series – retreat sign-ups, speaking invites, new clients, etc.
- And sure, track downloads if you want, but the real win here is in the quality of connection, not the size of the audience.
