How to Build Your Framework Into Your Podcast
With Megan Dougherty on the Business Podcast Spotlight
If you have a proprietary method, framework or system, it should be the bedrock of your podcast to build your thought leadership and educate your community.
Your Framework is Your Thought Leadership
When you have a proprietary methodology, it should be everywhere in your business.
Especially in your podcast.
You can do it by categorizing your episodes along the lines of your system, integrating your vocabulary into the conversations you have with guests, and presenting your finished episodes in a way that lets people at different parts of the process access what is relevant to them easily.
Whether you have a solo show, conduct interview or something else, when you have spent the time and effort to create a system that helps your clients and community succeed, your podcast should be a place where people can learn about it.
Paul Pape is the host of Tavern Tales, a new show designed to help him build a community and share the system he has created with Gamify Business. What system you ask? Why a class system with wizards, warriors, rangers and more to help creatives learna nd apply the business strategy they need without crawling up the walls. I am SO into it. He joined me on the Business Podcast Spotlight to talk about his business, and how his podcast can help him share this novel method of business coaching and consulting with more people.

Why Build Your Framework Into Your Podcast at All?
Lots of business owners have a framework or model they use to serve their clients. Paul has his Class System (Take the quiz here to find yours!), Angela Foster on our last episode had the SPARK Method, I have the Business Podcast Blueprints – these framworks help us differentiate the servies we provide and help our audiences and communities more effectively.
But that can take a lot of education. No one starts out knowing they’re an artificer, or that the type of podcast they need is a Relationship Building one with a dash of Audience Building. They know problems they have the outcomes they want – so if you want to speak the same language as your clients, you need to share it with them.
Your podcast is the perfect way to do that.
You can structure your episodes to use your own vocabulary, and talk about your topic area the way YOU understand it. This does a couple of things:
- It familiarizes your guests, if you have them, with your model and your langage – this makes it easier for them to talk about. Similarly, it keeps your methodolgy top of mind with your listeners.
- It creates a library of examples and demonstrations of your framework in action -you can use these in your sales process, and on your social media platforms.
- It lets you continue refining your model and how it can be applied in different situations – the more people you talk about it with, and the more situations you apply it to, the more robust it will become.
- It lets your interview guests and build relationships while also enforcing your thought leadership. Your guest is the expert on their area of expertise, but the way you’re going to be talking about it is guided by your proprietary model – for at least part of the conversation!
Business Podcast Blueprints Analysis
What I love about building a podcast that centers your framework is that it’s a way to get your Thought Leadership along with your Relationship Building.
Often, it can be challenging to do both. A Relationship Building podcast generally focuses on the guest and their expertise, and a Thought Leadership one centers yours. When you integrate your theory, methods and vocabulary int the show, however, you can, essentially, have it all.
In any relationship Building podcast, you are going to have a guest workflow that inclues an intake form. This is your chance to have them take your assessment if you have one. The trick here is making sure that it isn’t too extensive. If it takes 5 minutes or less, it’s a totally reasonable ask, and you’ll want to frame it in terms of “we’re going to be talking about THE FRAMEWORK, so I’d like to make sure you have the context for it.”
If you don’t have an assessment, or your asessment is too long, then you can include some information in your episode prep email. Something like “When we talk, I’ll be referring to the Widget Mastery System – particularly the ‘Widget Communications Methods’ step, where your expertise really comes into play. I’ve attached a little information about it for you below! Our audience is used to hearing things discussed this way, so I want to make sure you’re prepared.”
It’s all about being friendly and helpful while making sure you’re controlling how information is presented.
Other Ways to Optimize For Your Framework
While you want to make sure you are getting your methodology out there, you don’t want to be shoehorning it in awkwardly. It doesn’t always make sense to have an entire episode be in your vocabulary or focused really narrowly on what you teach. Here are a few other ways to build your framework into your podcast that take a slightly less ‘front an center’ position.
Reframing Using your Terminology
There’s also nothing wrong with repeating or rephrasing an excellent point your guest makes using your own vocabulary so that your audience will understand it more easily.
Structure the Delivery of Your Episodes
You can create different categories on your website for the different elements of your framwork. (Check out Paul’s podcast page – he as added a category for each Class type, so listeners can binge all of the episodes about their own! So cool.)
You can also add specific epsiodes into your email and nurturing sequences, on different sales and informational pages, and anywhere else people are looking for information related to what you do and how you do it.
